You can use databases to store information for displaying on your large websites as this makes it easier to create web pages on the fly using back end scripts. A website can be generate dynamically and get data from a database at the moment the user requests it and send a ready made page to them within seconds as opposed to needing the page pre coded and existing in files.
The most common database software is MySQL, it's widely used and are back end DB of choice for all our websites. There is now more specialisation in the online industry between web design and web development which is why we make sure to have specialised people assigned to each task in order to get the best results.
